Vineyards

Alder Springs, Mendocino County

Alder Springs is a remarkable site located in the hills above Laytonville in Mendocino County only 12 miles east of the Pacific Ocean. It is a 6000 acre ranch created by Stuart Bewly with 140 acres of grapevines amidst pastureland and timberstands all focused on regenerative management. The vineyard, first planted in 1993 is a unique confluence of soils, location and terrain that has such diversity that many different varietals can thrive here. Yields are naturally low in the rugged volcanic topography leading to profound wines.

Witters Vineyard, El Dorado

At over 3,300 feet in elevation in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, the Gamay planted at Witters Vineyard is one of the highest plantings in California. In most winters the vineyards gets covered with significant snowfall and to the northeast, you can see patches of snow on the Crystal Range of the Desolation Wilderness well into summer. This is winegrowing on the edge of what is possible in California and the wine shows a remarkable alpine character with bright red fruit aromatics and color and a nervy acidity. The vineyard was planted in volcanic clay loam soils in 1999 by Ron Mansfield in winemaking partnership with Steve Edmunds in what was a visionary and risky decision at the time.

Barsotti Vineyard, El Dorado

Situated at 2800 feet in elevation and marked by decomposed granite soils sprinkled with pink granite outcroppings, Barsotti Vineyard Is a unique and expressive place for Gamay. Initially planted in 2005 and expanded in 2010, this vineyard was another exploration of possibility by Ron Mansfield and Steve Edmunds. In comparison to the nearby and higher Witters Vineyard, it is a warmer location that creates a wine with more fruit density and tannin.

Camino Alto Vineyard, El Dorado

Planted in 1988, Camino Alto vineyard is another high elevation site planted in the volcanic clay loam of the El Dorado appellation in the Sierra Foothills. The Cabernet Franc shows an elegance granted by the cool air moving down from the Sierra Nevada mountains each night. Now farmed by Chuck Mansfield, we also made wine from Chenin Blanc that was grafted in 2021.

Persia Vineyard, Russian River Valley

Persia Vineyard is located in the eastern portion of the Russian River Valley appellation where it overlaps with Chalk Hill. The vineyard was planted in 2017 and shows the remarkable potential of Cabernet Franc in this region. The silty clay loam here has volcanic parent material and this contributes a wine with concentration and firm tannins.
